QGIS is open-source software and can show GPS coordinates/tracks accurately on fully-featured maps.

Download this file (4mb) and follow the instructions in the "read me" document to install QGIS on your computer. Maps have already been georeferenced into QGIS - their related files are in the linked .zip file download.

GPS coordinates accurately displayed on fully featured maps

Follow the steps below to view GPS coordinates on fully featured maps.

1. Download and install Quantum GIS
in Ubuntu, go to Applications > Software Center > QGIS
for Windows, Download the .exe file from here and install it.

2. After installation, start QGIS (Ubuntu - Applications > Science, Windows has a desktop shortcut installed) and go to Plugins > Fetch all python plugins and install all available plugins.

3. Create a folder on your computer called GIS

4. Farther down this page, click on and download the Index Image.jpg and the Index Image.wld files - place them both in your new GIS folder. The displayed image is the .jpg file. The .wld file tells QGIS how to precisely position the .jpg image.

5. In QGIS, go to Layer > Add Raster Layer > navigate to your GIS folder > select the Index Image.jpg file.

6. Maximise the QGIS display area, right click on the top, grey toolbars and deselect everything except: Layers, Map Navigation.
Next, click "Zoom Full".

Your screen should now look like this.

Click File > Save Project As and save to desktop. In Windows, now delete all other QGIS desktop shortcuts as this will be your program start-point.

To view available maps in QGIS, scroll down this page and download both the .jpg and the .wld files to your GIS folder. Add the map.jpg to QGIS in the same way you added the Index Image above. In the Layers window, click and drag the Index Image and place it at the bottom of the list of maps.

Zoom in using the + or - symbols and clicking on the map, or by selecting + and click/drag/select a square on the map to zoom directly to that square.

Example images from QGIS CambodiaMaps - the green dots are the individual GPS readings making up the trails.

Share the Health Cambodia

Not many people have the opportunity, or have the inclination, to help those less fortunate than ourselves, other than maybe a few dollars given to a charity of our choice. This is a story of two amazing people who took this one, two and three stages further and decided that they wanted to help in a more direct way.

Cara and James Garcia went to Cambodia for a holiday in 2008 with plans to see the normal things in the country, Angkor Wat, Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville. This they did, but they also saw past these things. What they saw was the poverty and lack of health care available to the poorest members of Khmer society. James is (or was) a paramedic in the US and his wife Cara an RN. After returning to the US, and I'm sure after much debate and soul searching, they decided to return to Cambodia and open a FREE primary health clinic in a rural area. They accepted that to do this would mean they had to sell everything they own, their house, their car and all their personal possessions. This cannot have been an easy decision as the have two young children, but make it they did. (Web Site)

This, in many ways, turned out to be the easy part, then all the applications and requests for support for this project began. They accomplished charitable status in the US and after many months gained initial support in principle from government officials in Cambodia and finally with the help of a Cambodian MP Mr. Thavy Nhem, found a suitable location to begin providing services.

Through the gracious assistance of Cambodian Parliament Member H.E. Thavy Nhem, we are operating the Chong Doung Community Health Center in Baray Distric, Kampong Thom province.

Cara, James and the kids arrived in Cambodia in early 2009 and after a lot of hard work have got the clinic up and running and are seeing many people everyday from as far away as 50 miles (it is the only medical clinic in the area).

These two amazing people have achieved a lot in a very short time but could do with our support financially, a few dollars would go a very long way towards the continued provision of this important service . They a not a big multinational care giver but two people who just want to make a difference for those who need their help in this small part of Cambodia. They are not in this to make profits ( other than the emotion and spiritual I suspect ). If you can PLEASE HELP, no matter how small (or large) everything will be put to good use I am sure.

Subject: Got an extra five bucks? By Ann-Marie Lindstrom

Five dollars can buy two dengue fever blood tests. Bet you didn't know that. I didn't. I don't even know what dengue fever is. So why do I care? I do know a paramedic from South Carolina who is living in the jungle in Cambodia. The blood test is important to him, because 80 people a day are coming to his free clinic from as far away as 50 miles. Right now he has an eight-year old patient with dengue and a fever of 104. He says all he can do is push IV fluids and hope the kid doesn't hemorrhage.

With all the grief and suffering we hear about every day, all over the world, maybe in our own neighborhoods these days with job losses and home foreclosures, this kid grabs me. Probably because I know the man struggling to keep him alive. Probably because a man, his wife and two young daughters--ordinary, middle-class people--gave up the convenient lifestyle we take for granted and moved to Cambodia, committed to spending two years of their lives to establish a free clinic. (OK,I'd guess the girls probably didn't have much of a say in that decision.)

They are doing this without governmental/organizational/church financial support. They don't have paid fund raisers. They don't have offices with executives making decisions. They don't spend money on advertising their efforts.

They are funding this endeavor with the proceeds from selling most of what they owned and donations.

He has invited me to come share the adventure. "Your life will never be the same." Yeah, I'm sure it wouldn't be. I'm equally sure I'm NOT going to the Cambodian jungle. If my own daughter had dengue fever in the Cambodian jungle, I'd have to hope there was someone like the paramedic and his RN wife to help her, because I am NOT going to the Cambodian jungle.

What I am doing is making small, periodic donation via PayPal. And I do mean small. I sent $5 today. I feel assured my $5 means something to the small clinic in the jungle. Much more than to larger charitable organizations that get mega-donations from corporations and governments.

Whether my $5 goes for two dengue fever blood tests or food for the two American girls yanked away from cable TV and trips to the mall (can't you just hear the older girl whining, "I didn't ask to be here in the jungle. I didn't even ask to be born. Why are you doing this to me?"), I am sure it will make a difference. I don't do very much in my every day life that feels like it "makes a difference."

Share the Health Cambodia has a FB page, but it isn't kept up to date. For some reason, the paramedic and his wife seem to spend their time doing other things. James D. Garcia has a personal page on FB. That's where the news comes from. And where the photos are.

Before the clinic even opened, Cara Garcia delivered a baby on the back of a tractor. Recently, they saved a cardiac arrest patient. James says that is unheard of in the Cambodian jungle.

I've read about people doing what I consider noble deeds. I've even known a few people who set out to do something to make life better for other folks. I've always admired them. From a distance. Without getting involved. Always thought "how wonderful that someone wants to do that." I repeat, I am NOT going to the Cambodian jungle, but for the first time I feel I can participate in spirit and support. Their project is small enough that my contribution can make a difference.

I invite you to participate, too. Remember that $5 can buy two dengue fever blood tests. That means even $2.50 can make a difference...it will buy one dengue fever blood tests. And if anyone knows what the heck dengue fever is, let me know, will you?

Just been watching a prog on TV about the British Soldiers killed in Iraq during the 6 years we were there. Really sad. I served in Iraq in 2004 and was surprised hpw many names I actually knew. I was part of one of the field medical teams and spent a lot of time with different units on the ground. Iraq was hot, dirty and dangerous but many of its people were glad that we were there and a small number were not so happy. I made many good friends as you do when your all in the poo..

Cambodia my second home.

What is it about Cambodia that I like it enough to call it a second home. Its dirty, run down and can be smelly and fly ridden, but apart from these small problems its a fantastic country, with wonderful history, friendly and generous people and from my point of view as a photographer it can be supremely photogenic with lots of stories to tell, some hard, some sad and some happy all of which need to be told.

An interesting but sad place to visit. Poor people grubbing for a living. A hard life...

The large Phnom Penh municiple Garbage dump is situated in a slum area of Phnom Penh known as Stung Meanchey. Close to 3000 people, men, women and children live and work on this dump . They collect recycleables,bottles,cans,pieces of metal or plastic and food stuffs, to sell for a few Reil in order to survive day to day. Many earn little more than a dollar a day.

Most of the rubbish pickers at Steung Meanchey are either from Phnom Penh or came to Phnom Penh looking for work and ended up in the slums. Many of the approximately 600 children have parents or relatives who also work on the dump and look after them. Some of them go to school, but most do not - at least not on a regular basis -, and it is safe to say that virtually none of them ever completes a primary school education. The school fees are too high and their families need them to collect rubbish to contribute to the family income. Adults earn, on average, 4000 to 5000 riels (US$1.00 to $1.25) a day; children earn on average about half that amount. A whole family working together can actually earn more money than they could in the rural village from which they originally came.

Finally, after just over a year, the CambodiaMaps CD has raised enough to make a sizeable donation to Wat Kampong Tralach School.
On Saturday 05/04/08, I delivered a brand new computer system to the Abbot of the wat. The computer was paid for by funds raised by the CambodiaMaps CD, so if you have bought one, this is where your money went.
Many thanks to everyone who has helped by giving their time, materials, and advice for the CD.

In total, $720 was raised; the money was spent as follows.

Plus 2 extension leads @ $4 each and 4 packs of plain paper @ $4 each (Pencil supermarket on St214) = $702.

Both CDs have been combined in this release, which uses an all new operating system allowing for faster and easier browsing, word searches, and images to be opened in the host computers own image editor.
The only omission in the new release is the Atlas of Cambodia (230mb), which was omitted to keep the file sizes down a little.
The file is around 530mb, and is in an .exe format.

You can now download these maps for free:

• The 1997 maps produced by the Cambodian Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the Technical Co-operation Program of the Government of Japan and the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia at 1:100,000 scale, (over 230mb of data), which are known as the JICA maps. This is a full series, but does not cover the whole country.

• A full series of US and Allied Forces military topographical maps of Cambodia dating from 1967 to 1980 at 1:250,000 scale which cover the whole country. In over a year of searching, this is the only map series that I have found here that covers the whole of the country and shows a tremendous amount of topographical detail.

• The Cambodian Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) roadmap organized province by province. (2000/2001, from 1:500,000 to 1:50,000 scale, around 40mb of data)

Just south of Kep town, sitting on the edge of Kep National Park and well worth a visit, is Vipassana wat.
It’s really easy to find, just head south along the coast until you get to the old market. A hundred meters or so further down the road you will see the following sign; picture A

Turn towards the hills and follow this road.

Soon, on your right, you will see the wat up on your right hand side.

Inside the small hilltop wat is a mass of recently restored murals and a large sitting Buddha,

...while below and hidden in the dense jungle that is only meters from the walls of the wat,

...the meditation center offers meditation instruction from 2pm to 5pm, from 6pm to 9pm (instruction in Khmer only). The 15 nuns and 5 monks resident at the center can offer overnight stays there.

I can't really imagine anyone needing a map to be able to find Vipassana, but here is one anyway.

Definately worth a look if you are in the area.

Went on a short trip to Sen Monorom in Mondulkiri a week ago.

We left Siem Reap at four in the morning in a minivan, reached Skuon at 08:00, where we had breakfast and met up with some other friends. At 09:30 we left Skuon, reaching what must have been Anchanh around 13:00 for lunch. There's a restaurant at the junction, food was local, plentiful and ok. Once off the main road the going slowed down. Intitially very smooth for the first odd 20 minutes, it rapidly turned very bad after the turnoff towards the Vietnamese border. We stopped at Keo Shei Ma for a snack of fertilised duck eggs (my friends) and tak krelok (for me). The local gold shop had 100 000 Riel notes, the first time I've ever seen them. We reached Sen Monorom after nightfall, could have been around 19:00. That would mean we took 5 hours for the 124km from the main road! An indication of the quality of the road. Saw some Camrys pass us and there's a regular bus service from Phnom Penh to Sen Monorom serviced by Hua Lian. I saw one of their broken- down buses on the way there (and on the way back, a couple of days later...) and they have a smallish office on the main road in town. During our time there I saw 6 foreigners and about 20 Khmer tour groups. Accommodation is plentiful, lots of guest houses all along the main road, quite a few restaurants and one new hotel. That's where we stayed, it's called the Oeurn Sakona Hotel, 012 950680 or 011 950680. Hot water and air con rooms on the ground and 1st floor, no hot water, no air con (don't need it anyway) on the 2nd floor. I'd think the guest houses offer similar quality rooms in the 10- 15USD range. Still don't know why we stayed there... On the only full day we had there we visited a Dak Dam hill tribe village, two waterfalls,

Sen Monorom and Bousra, and saw an ethnic minority cultural show in the evening. Unfortunately their performance was part of a bigger karaoke affair and just when I wanted to start taking photos the dancers were joined by a horde of Cambodians, nixing my idea of some nice pics of the hilltribe dances. The falls were nice but I'd only ever go back to see Bousra. On the track down to the falls there are stalls selling food, drink and cigarettes and there's an elephant that can be ridden for 15 minute walks for 5000 Riels per person. It fits 3. Care is needed if you decide to go down to the foot of the second fall. The wooden stairs are built solidly enough but if wet can be extremely dangerous. It's practically a straight 25- 30m fall. At the first fall there are Khmer style, roofed bamboo platforms for rent.
The third day was spent trying to get back. The minivan broke down and we got a lift to Keo Shei Ma from where we needed to rent a pick- up.

The place is a bit boring for a 6 hour forced stay, only offering a market that's mildly interesting, a couple of shops selling snacks in front of it and a restaurant about 100 m down the road towards Snuol that serves ok food. The pick- up driver charged us 120 USD for the return to Phnom Penh (not that bad if in a biggish group, we were 9). We stopped for some nom pang in Kampong Cham, there are three shops selling that and rice porridge right on the main roundabout. The middle one seems to be the best, the other two were empty anyway. Lots of places around for a normal sit- down meal, we just didn't have the time. Got into Phnom Penh around 22:00, I went straight to my hotel, the Town/City View Hotel on 111 St. just off Sihanouk Blvd. (yes, I've gone up- market, no more Asia Hotel for me). So, how would I rate Mondulkiri? Ok for curious first- timers, the temperature was nice, Bousra falls were worthwhile, the accomodation and restaurant situation is good enough. There's an internet cafe that's also the only non- hotel/restaurant place that is nice enough to have a beer at, didn't try getting online. But would I go again? I seriously doubt it. Lots of people ask which province in the northeast is more worth going to, Ratanakiri or Mondulkiri? I've now been to both and would always recommend going to Ban Lung instead of Sen Monorom. Not because the road there is better (just 2- 2.5 hours of dirt road from the turnoff at Stung Treng) but because there's so much more to see. In my opinion Ratanakiri beats Mondulkiri easily hands down.

Phnom Penh- Stung Treng- Dong Kralor, boat info

Phnom Penh to Stung Treng takes roughly 10 hours, the stretch is serviced by Hua Lian, Sorya and Rith Mony, possibly others that I don't know off. I used Hua Lian, they stopped in Kampong Cham, Snuol (for lunch) and Kratie. Arrived in Stung Treng at 17:00h after starting off in Phnom Penh at 07:30. Ticket cost 7.50USD.

Stung Treng has lots of accomodation on offer, directly opposite the ferry dock on the riverfront are a couple of guest houses with not- so- nice tiny rooms at low prices (3- 5USD). Around the market and the 'plaza' are several new GHes, e.g. Ly Ly, Stung Treng, Sok San, all built within the past year with clean, decently sized rooms with fan, TV, air- con and hot water (except Ly Ly, but coming soon), 8- 15USD. The LP guidebook is woefully outdated BTW, the hotels mentioned there that are a bit further out don't have cavernous, atmospheric rooms, they're actually grotty, dirty holes. Don't even bother going there.

Restaurants attached to the GHes on the riverfront are geared towards the budget tourists staying there, all the old favourites available, e.g. spaghetti, pancakes, fried rice, cheap beer. There's one restaurant in town, the Sorya Restaurant, which I wouldn't recommend. It offers lousy, overpriced food. We ordered tom yam, fried veggies and river fish, the tom yam was insipid, the veggies were sweet & sour bell peppers & onions and only half a fish arrived at the table. A much better local restaurant is located on the opposite side of the 'plaza' a bit further down. It's got a menu in English, Khmer and Chinese and prices are posted on the walls. Alternatively you can buy your meals at the market stalls.

From Stung Treng to the border you'll have to get the ferry crossing over to 'Cowtail Island' (don't know why the locals call it island, it isn't). Lots of ferries do the trip in about 10 minutes, don't make the mistake of getting onto the only ferry that carries vehicles (only if you don't have one of course). It'll wait until enough cars have got on in spite of what the captain might say about leaving in three minutes. We waited for an hour going, and half an hour coming back. Transport between the ferry dock and Dong Kralor is irregular. The distance is about 56km. Exiting Cambodia and entering Laos seem to be straightforward. The distance between the border posts is around 2km, lots of people were walking it as it's in the shade and not too muddy.

No visa- on- arrival available for Laos!

At the Voen Kham/ Khao river crossing no visas are available at all. So if you're coming by boat you will have to get off it and find transport to Dong Kralor to get your Cambodian VOA then return to it to carry on southward. The whole setup is a bit confusing, so here are more details:
If arriving by boat you can get stamped out of Laos at Voen Kham but you won't get your VOA at the Cambodian post at Voen Khao (both basically the same settlement, just the Lao and Khmer names). To get the Cambo VOA you have to get to Dong Kralor and back again if you want to carry on the trip by boat. It is possible to overnight at a GH at Voen Khao, 7USD, very basic but also very quiet with a beautiful view across the Mekong. In the rainy season the track between Voen Khao and Dong Kralor is unusable so you'll have to cross over to Voen Kham after getting your 'proof of entry' at Voen Khao to get the VOA at Dong Kralor. Some restaurants on the Lao side, I had khao niao, beef laab, chicken tom yam and fried morning glory. The first Lao food I've had since 2005! No need to mention it was excellent! After checking out some boat prices returned to Stung Treng.

Boat prices:
As there's no regular river transport between the Lao border and PP the only way to do it by boat is to charter one. The guy at Voen Khao (Mr. Kha) charges 440+ USD for the whole trip. He says it takes just six hours on one of his speed boats, which look exactly like the ones that run between Huay Xai and Luang Pabang (he buys them in Vientiane, so no surprise). He supplies a life jacket but no helmet. Bring ear plugs. Mr. T from the Riverside GH in Stung Treng also offers a boat to PP. It's a bigger, slower boat with a roof, 550+ USD, 10 hours.
Return to Stung Treng from the border takes about 1 1/2 hours.
BTW, the road to Stung Treng and up to the border is excellent!

Mrs. C and I had a long weekend away this week. We took ourselves on a 700km tour of the South East of Cambodia. Along the way we came across 2 places that are “undergoing development” and may soon be changed beyond recognition.
Firstly, some of the limestone mountains at Kampong Trach are being sold to quarrying concessions, and, although this is a comparatively small scale operation, it’s damaging the landscape in a noticeable way. The approach and entrance to the swimming cave has already been spoiled, how long before the rest go the same way?
Secondly, an American company has bought the rights to develop Angkaol’s “secret beach”. Reportedly, they already have permission for the development from CDC. How long before the fishing villages under the palms turn into a small Sihanoukville?

Following are route guides to these 2 places in the Kep area, the Hollow Mountain caves at Kampong Trach and the “secret beach” at Angkaol. Go and see them before it’s too late.

From Phnom Penh to Kep, the Soriya bus costs $4 each way, or, if you prefer, a taxi costs around $25 for the whole car. Find yourself a hotel in Kep and hire a small moto ($5 a day).

G = Turn right for the Hollow Mountain, go straight ahead for the swimming cave, (not so good now).

The main cave of the hollow mountain was formed by the collapse of the roof of a large cavern. Remaining is a circular hole in the center of the mountain surrounded by an undercut wall, from which further caves and staircases lead away.

The swimming cave entrance is a bit of a mess now as someone is quarrying around it.

The water is deep enough to allow you to swim easily.

There will be lots of kids eager to show you around the caves, take along a few thousand reil for them for their time.

A = Sessaw, the white horse junction. Traveling from Kep, turn right here.

B = Damnak Chang’Aeur. Turn right at this stone sign.

C = Follow this road.

D = Follow the road round the corner to the left at Phum Phnom Liev market.

E = Straight ahead.

F = Turn left.

G = Turn right immediately over the bridge and pass through archway H.

H = Follow this road.

I = Turn right.

J = Turn right for the main beach (car access), or turn left for the smaller beaches (no car access).

K + L = Angkaol beach.

The main beach itself is around 2km long and is made up of fine yellow/orange sand.
Just prior to this visit, there had been some rough seas for a few days, so quite a lot of sea grass had been pushed up onto the beach. It’s normally a lot cleaner than shown in these photos.

The Tonlé Sap (meaning Large Fresh Water River but more commonly translated as Great Lake) is a combined lake and river system of huge importance to Cambodia. It is the largest freshwater lake in South East Asia and is an ecological hotspot that was designated as a UNESCO biosphere in 1997.

Traffic is an unholy mess at times on the streets of Phnom Penh with everybody wanting to go different ways and nobody wishing to give way. It makes for interesting images and less than traditional ways of crossing the street. Take care but keep moving.

Cambodia has a unique hydrological system. The Mekong River and Lake Tonle Sap are connected by the Tonle Sap River which twice a year reverses its direction of flow. From July to the end of October, when the level of the Mekong is high, water flows into the Tonle Sap River, which fills Lake Tonle Sap, thereby increasing the size of the lake from 2,600 km2 to about 10,500 km2 at its maximum. The storage capacity of Lake Tonle Sap is estimated at 72 km3. In early November, when the level of the Mekong decreases, the Tonle Sap River reverses its flow, and water flows from Lake Tonle Sap to the Mekong River and thence to the Mekong Delta.

About 86% of Cambodia's territory (156,000 km2) is included in the Mekong River basin, the remaining 14% draining directly towards the Gulf of Thailand. Cambodia was a member of the Mekong River Committee between 1957 and 1975. On 5 April 1995, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam signed an agreement for the development of the Mekong River. Under the agreement, the Mekong River Committee became the Mekong River Commission.

The average annual discharge of the Mekong River entering Cambodia is estimated to be close to the discharge at Paksé (324.45 km3/year) in Lao PDR, some 120 km upstream from the border with Cambodia. Other inflows to the Mekong-Tonle Sap system from outside the country amount to 29.9 km3 from Vietnam and 1.2 km3 from Thailand. On average, 471.4 km3/year flow out of the country in the Mekong channels and tributaries to Vietnam.

The internal renewable surface water resources (IRSWR) have been computed as the difference between outflow and inflow, i.e., 115.9 km3. This figure does not include the unknown discharge of small rivers to the Gulf of Thailand and is thus probably an underestimate. Groundwater resources are estimated at 17.6 km3, most of which (an estimated 13 km3/year) is drained by the rivers and cannot be considered as additional water resources. The total renewable water resources of Cambodia are therefore estimated at 476.110 km3/year.

Wat Phnom, or "Hill Temple," is built upon an artificial hill about 100' high. It is here that the city of Phnom Penh ("Penh's Hill") was founded in 1373. Shrines and other buildings have been put up and restored several times since then, the last major restoration taking place in 1926.

Well worh a visit but it will cost you a dollar. Elephants and monkeys can be seen here most days. The monkeys are cheeky little 'beggars'.

Cambodia's Royal Palace complex was begun by King Norodom (1834-1904) in 1886, when the capital was moved to Phnom Penh. Most buildings were completed before World War I, with involvement by French administrators and Thai designers and architects. French influence can be seen in the formal gardens which enhance the palace, and there are some European-style buildings on the grounds.

The building shown in this photo is the Throne Hall, which was originally built in wood. The present structure dates from 1919. Imitating the face towers at Angkor, four faces overlook the complex from the main spire high above the roof (closeup), whose eaves are braced by flying celestials.

The grounds of the Palace are well worth a visit.

Central Market - Psar Tmei is a large building housing many stalls as well as having various arms of stalls all away around the outside. All kinds of things can be found there from exotic Cambodian silver to hand painted materials, kitchen equipment, flower stalls, bags, clothing, jewelery, electronics and crafts. Natural light only for the interior of the building means that the market closes around 5.00pm. Great atmosphere and very interesting, not to mention great buys. You couldn't keep me away from 'browsing'. I wish I had bought more material - I'm not sure what I would do with it, but it was lovely. Great place to buy your T shirts, 10 for $12 last time I was there. Pay it a visit.

The Climate

The climate varies from temperate and subtropical in the north to tropical in the south. Precipitation varies from 2,000 to 2,500 millimeters (mm) in the mountainous areas and from 1,600 to 2,200 mm in the midlands and plains. The average annual rainfall is 1,960 mm, with a minimum of 650 mm in Phan Rang, and a maximum of 4,760 mm in Bac Quang. The rainy season lasts from April/May to October/November. Some 70-80 percent of the total annual precipitation occurs during the 3-6 months of the rainy season.

The driest periods are either from December to February or from January to March depending on location. The temperature varies from 15°C in winter to 25°C in summer. The annual average evaporation of the territory is 953 mm.

The Khmer

The Khmer (Cambodians) account for the vast majority of the population, producing a homogeneity unique in Southeast Asia that has encouraged a strong sense of national identity. Ethnic minorities include Chinese, Vietnamese, Muslim Cham-Malays, Laotians, and various indigenous peoples of the rural highlands.

The Khmer, who belong to the Mon-Khmer ethnolinguistic group, are concentrated in the lowland regions surrounding the Mekong River and the Tonle Sap, on the transitional plain, and along the coast. The product of centuries of intricate cultural and ethnic blending, the Khmer moved southward before 200 BC into the fertile Mekong delta from the Khorat Plateau of what is now Thailand. They were exposed to successive waves of Indian influence and, in the 8th century AD, to Indo-Malayan influence, perhaps including immigration from Java. Immigrations of Tai peoples occurred from the 10th to the 15th century, of Vietnamese beginning in the 17th century, and of Chinese in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Among the ethnic minorities in Cambodia before 1975, the Chinese were the most important, for they controlled the country's economic life. They were shunted aside in the communist-led revolution of the 1970s and made to become ordinary peasants. Those who did not seek refuge abroad after 1975 and others who subsequently returned regained some of their former influence as urban centres were revived.

The Vietnamese minority occupied a somewhat lower status than the Chinese, and most of them fled or were repatriated to Vietnam after 1970. In the 1980s, however, a large number of Vietnamese migrants, many of them former residents of Cambodia, settled in the country. Centuries of mutual dislike and distrust have clouded Vietnamese-Khmer relations, and intermarriage has been infrequent.

The next most important minority after the Vietnamese is the Cham-Malay group. Known in Cambodia as Khmer Islam or Western Cham, the Cham-Malay group also maintained a high degree of ethnic homogeneity and was discriminated against under the regime of Democratic Kampuchea. Receiving only slightly better treatment than the Khmer Islam during that period were the smaller communities of indigenous peoples. These communities, known collectively as Khmer Loeu (“Upland Khmer”), include the Katu, Mnong, Stieng, Jarai, and Rhadé, among others, and inhabit the sparsely populated northeastern provinces bordering Vietnam and Laos.

The Cambodian genocide of 1975-1979, in which approximately 1.7 million people lost their lives (21% of the country's population), was one of the worst human tragedies of the last century. The Khmer Rouge, headed by Pol Pot, combined extremist ideology, ethnic animosity, and a disregard for human life to produce murder on a massive scale.

As hundreds of thousands of people slowly starved in the rice fields, a select number met their fate inside Khmer Rouge interrogation centers. The most famous of these centers, codenamed S-21, was located in the abandoned suburban Phnom Penh high school of Tuol Sleng ("hill of the poison tree"). To the Tuol Sleng neighborhood, S-21 was known simply as konlaenh choul min dael chenh - "the place where people go in but never come out."

Over 17,000 prisoners were interrogated, tortured, and executed there - only a handful survived.

S21 is an interesting but sad place to visit.

The Silver Pagoda (official name: Preah Vihear Preah Keo Morokat) in Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia, is the most notable wat (Buddhist temple) in the city, and is the official temple of the King of Cambodia. It is named for the 5,000 silver tiles which are used to pave the temple's floor. Its life-size Buddha image of solid gold is a popular tourist attraction.

The Mekong is one of the world's major rivers. It is regarded as the 10th-longest river in the world, and the 10th-largest by volume (discharging 475 km³ of water annually). Its estimated length is 4880 kilometres, and it drains an area of 810,000 km².[1] From the Tibetan Plateau it runs through China's Yunnan province, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. All except China and Myanmar belong to the Mekong River Commission. The extreme seasonal variations in flow and the presence of rapids and waterfalls have made navigation extremely difficult.

The festival always takes place around the full moon in November. Each boat is paddled by 40 rowers and decorated with incredible care and attention. Normally, the racing boats are kept safe and sound inside the Buddhist temple precincts. The prows are carved into naga (serpent) heads, which are symbolic figures in Hindu and Buddhist mythology, representing rainbows, fertility and water.

As the sun sets on the last day of the festival, the grand finale makes this one of the greatest spectacles the world can offer. All the boats line up on the Mekong and the most beautifully decorated vessel then sails calmly out alone into the centre of the river where it performs the "cutting of the string" ceremony. Only when this has been completed can the people be sure they have dutifully honoured the mighty Mekong and ensured that the floods are over for the year.

The places in Cambodia are wonderful but its is the people, especially the children, that are the wonder of the country, so friendly and full of life even when they live in cicumstances we would have difficulty tolerating. Little Som Nang has a hole in his heart which will be fixed soon at The Calumet Hospital in Phnom Penh. Despite his illness, he become very breathless, he is so full of life and a happy little fellow. I hope all goes well with his Operation.

Release V1.3

Apologies for not updating this blog recently, I started a new job a few weeks ago and that has been taking up much of my spare time.
However, things are now starting to settle down at the school and I can catch up on updating the CD.
V 1.3 will be released next weekend (12.05.07) and will include all previously submitted material shown on this blog - with the exception of the Japanese road maps in the last entry, I am still looking into publishing them.
Take a wander around to the Jungle after Saturday evening to see the new release.

I've recently been given some modern road maps of Cambodia and am currently considering putting them onto the CambodiaMaps CD.

These maps were made in 1997 and in 2000 and are government issued.

Japanese / Cambodian collaborative map. 1997. 236mb of data on 36 maps. Lots of detail.

Cambodian map. Divided by province. around 40mb of data. Not very detailed but complete coverage of Cambodia.

I'm taking time to consider their addition for various reasons, your comments or ideas on this would be welcome.

Clickable maps

I’m working on making the maps on the CD clickable, i.e. to see a photo of a place, click on the marked spot on the map. Below is what I have come up with. Your comments regarding effectiveness and / or improvements, or suggestions as to other features to include would be very welcome.

On the CD will be a list of map areas that include pictures, (when I have gathered enough I will remove the list and make an interface system).

Each entry will be shown as in the picture below. This is a low resolution picture, photobucket will not allow large files.

Clicking on the target will link directly to a full size image, or a page of full size images, of the given location.

The map page would be linked into the CD o/s and would also be available in the atlas section in a full-colour, printable, MSWord .doc format (find it on the CD yourself at the moment).

The printed page(s) would include any and all photos hot-linked to the relevant section of the CD map in thumbnail or similar sizes, and would also include any notes sent by a contributor, for instance: road conditions, route guide, tips regarding the location(s), entry prices, etc.

If there is more than one hot-link target on the page, all would be printed, although you could edit the page yourself to only include the info you need before you print it.

The overall idea is that you can print a couple of good quality colour map pages and pictures related to where you will be going for a small sum and just put them in a pocket to supplement, or add detail to, any other route finding equipment that you use.

At the moment I’m working with Jim CA2’s temple GPS co ordinates, but this could be expanded to include anything in Cambodia. Contributions welcome.

When I’ve finished the beta I’ll leave a copy at the Jungle.

Why did I make the CD?

This CD was compiled with specific reasons in mind.

To raise awareness about rural education in Cambodia, and to elicit the help of readers in supporting educational initiatives, especially in the Kep and Kampot areas.

The CD is not full of adverts requesting money or donations. This information is all contained on one page.

In September 2006, I moved to Kep to live and to help my wife with her work in the area. During the first week of our stay we were invited by a motodop driver and his family to visit Wat Kampong Tralach to see a local festival.

Whilst there I noticed a small schoolroom in the corner of the pagoda grounds and enquired as to what the school taught. I was told that English language classes were held there in the evenings from 5 to 7pm. As I had been teaching English in Phnom Penh and had no work in the evenings I volunteered to teach at the school. The head monk and his assistant were the teachers, and they were using a 1958 Longman grammar guide affectionately known as "Book One" and a single, battered copy of New Headway Pre-intermediate, these books were the only teaching resources that they had.

My first class consisted of 21 students, all with varying abilities, all exceptionally keen to learn and all attending the school 6 nights a week. Within a couple of weeks the number of students in the class had grown to 72 and the classes were spilling out of the schoolroom and into the yard, with people watching over the waist-high classroom wall. Although most of the students helped each other, the differing levels of ability were beginning to become a problem and frustrations were beginning to arise with both the lower and higher level students in the class. My solution was to offer the students an entrance exam based on New Headway Elementary that would split the class into 2 classes; one for Elementary level students Mon, Wed, Frid; and one for Pre-intermediate Tues, Thurs, Sat. After the exam I went to Phnom Penh and bought around 40 copies each of both books, a very large English-Khmer dictionary, and 150 pens and pencils and returned to the school. My entire expenditure was less than $80. Classes settled into a steady routine, the head monks assistant and myself jointly teaching each class. My intentions were to remain teaching in the school at nights and to continue helping my wife with her work during the days as this had been working out very well. I informed the monks and the students that I would be teaching there for 2 to 3 years, and would see most of them through the New Headway series.

Unfortunately, this didn't work out as planned. At midday on November 21st 2006, while driving our moto through Phum Phnom Leav along the road to Angkaol, my wife and I were hit by a drunken driver. In the collision, my right collarbone was broken in 2 places and I broke a rib, luckily both my wife and the drunk were unhurt. We returned to Phnom Penh for medical attention. Although we were helped enormously by the local police and local community, the accident left my wife with an understandable fear of traveling in the area, and she has since requested a transfer back to Phnom Penh. The lack of structured field support from my wife's employers means we will be staying in Phnom Penh.

This has left the Wat Kampong Tralach school with no native English-speaking teacher and lesser access to materials and advice.

The correct forms of address when speaking to monks are:

Tday tcha khun - a very polite address for a monk either older or younger than yourself.

Lohk Bohng - a polite informal address for a monk older than yourself

Lohk Pa-ohng - a polite informal address for a monk younger than yourself
